24 august 2012 4:56 pm conservative future hq is not fit for purpose - and there's only one way to save it anyone who has followed the internal workings of conservative future will tell you that its central body has become a failed institution. while an estimated 18,000 young people are nominally members of cf, the central organisation acts as a clique of a few hundred men. amazingly, its current chairman, ben howlett, was elected in 2010 with 113 votes. i have tried to get to the bottom of why a supposedly 18,000-strong membership organisation can elect a chairman on 113 votes, but alas the current chairman did not respond to my requests for comment. weirdly, it appears that only 2,621 ballot papers were sent out at the latest leadership election. i put it to the current chairman that something was amiss, considering the supposed 18,000 members, but he has not responded. it never used to be this way. when conservative future works, it is an effective force that empowers young people to campaign for the conservative party and which builds the membership numbers of the tories. there have been some unifying, effective cf chairmen, such as nick vaughan, mark clarke and donal blaney. currently, cf is blighted by infighting. student societies are not getting the support they need to build the party, and some local cf branches are being provoked by the idiotic behaviour of the central cf organisation. the uk independence party describes cf as being in "meltdown", and they are not far from the truth. in april, the guido fawkes blog reported that "no less than 40% of leeds conservative future committee walked out of the conservative party this weekend and joined farage's growing bandwagon.". this fiasco is part of an unprecidented move by young tories away from conservative future to other centre-right organisations. emily burditt, former vice-president of nottingham university conservative association, says that conservative future is "alienating people from what should be a strong youth movement where every young person with tory sympathies feels welcome". she says that: "if anything is more worrying than how few people voted, it is the amount of anecdotal evidence one hears that they were not even given the chance to vote, whilst others who were not entitled to vote, were given ballots. i have often heard people say that only those who could be relied upon to vote in a certain way received their ballots. even if this is not true, the fact that the rumour is so widespread warrants serious investigation and an improvement in transparency." she says that: "i do not feel comfortable at cf events. i tend to feel far more at home, and more welcome, by other right-minded, yet non-partisan, organisations that encourage youth participation such as the liberty league, asi and ybf, among others. luckily such brilliant organisations reach out to the disaffected tory youth (along with members of ukip), yet these organisations should be 'as well as' not 'instead of'." there is, however, a way to fix conservative future. at its next election, in the spring, it needs to select someone who can heal the wounds. it needs a unifying character who can stop the members giving up on cf. someone who is well-connected in westminster. someone who has the personality to phone up members and excite them into door-knocking across the land. the job needs someone with the gravitas to represent young people's views to the leadership, rather than repeating the leadership's cliched catchphrases. and it needs someone who won't be gaffe-prone - who won't, for example, claim to admire a terrorist. among the legion of good, young tories, there is one man who stands out as having the capability and the balls to run conservative future effectively. one man who will bring the 18,000 members of the youth wing of the party together - not just the clique of 200 insiders. and what is this person's name? his name is oliver cooper. august 24, 2012 | permalink | comments (0) share this article: facebook twitter google+ messenger linkedin digg it newsvine fark nowpublic reddit 10 august 2012 2:55 pm the puzzling logic of the bbc's documentary on young tories student tories across britain have a new hate figure. his name is joe cooke (pictured). this recent graduate was a star, if one can call him that, of a bbc documentary broadcast yesterday, which examined life at the oxford and cambridge university conservative associations. how much of the programme showed the real cooke, i can't say, but there was one significant problem with how the bbc handled the programme: the chronology made no sense. according the the documentary, cooke, after his term as president, became outraged at the behaviour of the oxford tories. he was particularly venomous about his successor, who, i suspect, found him to be a prima donna. so cooke leaked to the student newspaper lurid details of student tories singing nazi songs, and then caused the national press to get involved. but there's a problem with this story. the singing of nazi songs by two or three people - obviously not real tories - actually occurred in michaelmas 2010. this was two terms before joe cooke become president. the bbc failed to say this explicitly - not surprising, because it would have ruined the programme. if cooke was so outraged by the behaviour, why did he not resign in protest in michaelmas 2010, rather than a year later during his successor's term in office? or, indeed, why did he not insist upon disciplinary systems during his time in office to ensure such singing would never again be tolerated? was it not his duty to expel the perpetrators, and then, in the interests of his party, shut up? certainly, if he had raised his concerns with cchq, the central party would have insisted on measures - and helped him to implement them. there's another problem with the documentary. with the bbc's help, the whiny cooke seemed to want to be seen as a poor, impoverished outsider with a father who was sent to prison. he is not, apparently, as posh as the other members of the oxford tories, and is forced to change his accent. so he wants to stop the society being as toffish. this seems to be a new view, because when he was standing for election the independent reported that: "young cooke appears blissfully oblivious to the coming cuts, inviting fellow ouca members to a weekly lunch of quails' eggs and champagne as part of his campaign for the association presidency". august 10, 2012 | permalink | comments (0) share this article: facebook twitter google+ messenger linkedin digg it newsvine fark nowpublic reddit 24 july 2012 11:52 am barack obama belittles entrepreneurs. should he be in power? has barack obama gone completely mad? in a weird attempt to gain votes in this year's presidential election, he has launched an attack on entrepreneurs, saying that they aren't actually responsible for their successes. this is hardly a way to win extra votes in the land of the american dream – but it will no doubt please some of his left-wing supporters. here's the quote: "if you've got a business – you didn't build that. somebody else made that happen. the internet didn't get invented on its own. government research created the internet so that all the companies could make money off the internet. the point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together." it's a peculiar argument because american bureaucrats did not create the internet. yes, they stuck their oar in, achieving little. but there are lots of urban legends about this. al gore was widely interpreted as claiming that he invented it in the us congress. more credibly, it is asserted that it started as a us defence project called arpanet. this is wrong, however. in 1940, way before the us government got involved, george stibitz of bell labs, part of the at&t company, transmitted data between teletype machines in new hampshire and new york. if a
